Who knew that E-cigarettes could be fatal to our lungs?
A patient from the United States passed away recently due to mysterious respiratory disease which was caused by vaping- reports health officials.
The disease has triggered in 22 US states with 193 potential cases as reported by The Centers for Disease Control. These cases were all linked to vaping THC, the core active compound in cannabis says CDC experts.
It all started over the course of two months between 28 June and 20 August and the person who died of vaping was “hospitalized with unexplained illness” states Dr. Jennifer Layden, the chief medical officer, and state epidemiologist in Illinois.
“We are saddened to hear of the first death related to the outbreak of severe lung disease in those who use e-cigarette products.” He also added- “This tragic death in Illinois reinforces the serious risk associated with e-cigarette products.
The cause of the illness has not been identified but is in the process. “In many cases, patients have acknowledged recent use of THC- containing products,” says Dr. Illeana Arias.
SYMPTOMS ASSOCIATED
- Coughing
- Short of breath
- Fatigue
- Vomiting and diarrhea
There is no proof of an infectious disease- such as virus or bacteria being responsible. The central cause of death is still a mystery. There will also be a laboratory test of vaping liquid samples in order to identify any harmful compounds.
It has been reported that a “black market” sit legally selling THC-containing vape cartridges in some states. There are also fake cartridges floating in the online market.
The researchers are still not confirmed regarding the mystery surrounding the death and the link to THC products is not yet clear. Mitch Zeller of the US Food and Drug administration said-“we find ourselves in the early stages of these investigations trying to piece together the facts.” The department was exploring whether the product contained an additional substance.
The president of the American Vaping Association is very clear with his thoughts and is confident that the illness was caused by devices containing cannabis or other synthetic drug and not nicotine.
