Many students in highly reputed institutions go through many different kinds of ragging in their day to day life which goes to the extent where they end up giving up their lives.
Over hundreds of junior students of a medical college have all shaved their head as a symbol of protest against ragging. This incident has come to light from the Uttar Pradesh University of medical sciences. 150 students were roaming around the campus as a form of protest. The University is located in Kurawali-Mainpuri-Etawah Road.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University has told the media that strong actions will be taken against those indulging into ragging. He also added saying that junior students will directly complain to the warden in this regard and that he will personally keep an eye for any mischief that takes place in the campus.
On 22 May Payal Tadvia Gynaecologist had to go through a similar fate. Recently, a report by an NGO revealed that there has been a rise of over 80 per cent of ragging cases in medical colleges in the country from the last 2016. The number rose to 171 in 2017 and 163 in 2018. These are the medical colleges run by both central and state governments. It has also been noticed that most of these cases are coming from government medical institutes.
The supreme court has clearly mentioned saying that- “ Ragging is any disorderly conduct, whether by words spoken or written, or by an act which has the effect of teasing, treating or handling with rudeness any student, indulging in rowdy or interdisciplinary activities which cause or are likely to cause annoyance, hardship or psychological harm or to raise fear or apprehension thereof in a fresher or a junior student and which has the effect of causing or generating a sense of shame or embarrassment so as to adversely affect the psyche of a fresher or a junior student.”

- The Prohibition of Ragging Act, 1996. (Applicable in the State of Tamil Nadu)
- The Kerala Prohibition of Ragging Act, 1998.
- The Maharashtra Prohibition of Ragging Act, 1999.
- The Prohibition of Ragging in Educational Institutes Act, 2000 (Applicable in the State of West Bengal.
We still hear and see failures that have been observed due to negligence in maintaining discipline in the institution on the part of the institution.
