Mumbai experienced a power cut on Monday morning around 10:00 am. The control room of the civic authority said that there was a grid failure at the Tata power in Kalwa and it would take several hours to fix the problem. People had started trending hashtags minutes after the power cut.
Many regions across the city namely, Thane, Kalyan, suburbs, South Mumbai have no electricity. Including the local train service was also shut down. The trains are the lifeline of over 70 lakh people of Mumbai.
The western railway line majorly faced the disturbance. The services are shut down and people were seen walking on the tracks. However, it will be restored when the traction power supply is fixed.
The Tata Power has been unavailable to comment on the issue. They are making efforts to restore the power supply along with the Maharashtra Transmission Company and Power Grid Corporation. Nitin Raut, Maharashtra energy minister said that the failure happened at circuit number 2 at the Kalwa-Padgha centre of the state’s transmission company.
After the power blackout for over an hour, electricity supply was restored in Churchgate, Kharghar and Mumbra. The power was supplied to emergency services like trains and hospitals. The western railways were restored at around 12.20 pm while the central railways started the operations at 10:55 am.
Maharashtra’s chief minister Uddhav Thackeray has announced an official probe into the faulty grid. He had a meeting with the Nitin Raut and concluded the steps that are to be undertaken to restore the electricity supply.
In the COVID time, with hundreds of patients in the hospitals, it is necessary to repair the power outage. The BMC commissioner has asked the hospitals to ensure that they have sufficient diesel for a minimum of eight hours. Hence, there will be no power failures in hospitals.
Adani electricity, one of the biggest electricity supplier of the state are helping by supplying to ‘critical services in Mumbai’. They were able to sustain the supply for the city.
The power cut has majorly affected the scheduled online exams and classes. Many students were unable to give the exams due to the breakdown and tweeted regarding the same. The electricity providers to restore the power cut soon said sources.
